Titled "The Garden of Pain," this May 1993 entry in DC Vertigo's surrealist series presents one of the more quietly unsettling covers of the run — a figure in Shade's wildly patterned coat stands with a green apple obscuring his face entirely, in a clear nod to Magritte, with jagged blade-like shapes looming in the misty background. Chris Bachalo's painted cover work here is precise and dreamlike, balancing the absurd and the ominous with real confidence. Milligan, Bachalo, and Bryant were clearly firing on all cylinders by issue #35.
