Dave Sim was born on 17 May 1956 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, and has spent the better part of five decades as one of the most distinctive — and divisive — figures in North American comics.
He co-founded the small press publisher Aardvark-Vanaheim in 1977 alongside his then-partner Deni Loubert, the same year his signature creation, *Cerebus*, launched in December. What began as a parody of sword-and-sorcery comics in the vein of Conan gradually transformed into something far more ambitious: a single 300-issue, 6,000-page graphic novel completed in March 2004. Over those years Sim stretched the medium's storytelling and visual possibilities considerably, eventually tackling politics, gender, and philosophy with increasing complexity. Gerhard, his longtime creative collaborator, co-owned Aardvark-Vanaheim until dissolving their partnership in 2007.
Beyond *Cerebus*, Sim produced *Glamourpuss*, a study of photorealistic comics illustration, and *Judenhass*, a work about the Holocaust that he has already released into the public domain — part of a broader commitment to creators' rights that includes arranging for his entire body of work to enter the public domain after his death. He was also a principal architect of the Creator's Bill of Rights in 1988. A prolific hand across his own catalog as writer, artist, inker, letterer, and colorist, Sim remains an enduring, if contested, force in the independent comics world.
