Against a deep, shadowy background, the aardvark Cerebus — dressed in a shirt and tie — stares with weary resignation at a luminous, swirling apparition of a glowing figure tumbling through a vortex of golden light. Dave Sim's cover for this August 1982 issue perfectly captures that tension between the mundane and the otherworldly that makes Cerebus such a compelling read. With the story titled "Heroes," the contrast between Cerebus's rumpled, unheroic appearance and the blazing supernatural presence before him sets a wonderfully intriguing tone.
