Cerebus #65 from Aardvark-Vanaheim makes a striking statement with a stark, all-black cover dominated entirely by the hand-lettered phrase "Anything Done for the First Time Unleashes a Demon" — a provocative title that sets an ominous mood before you've read a single page. The bold, expressive calligraphy fills the cover with an almost ritualistic energy, letting the words themselves do the visual heavy lifting. Dave Sim and Gerhard's long-running independent series was clearly operating with real artistic confidence in 1984, and this issue's arresting typographic design is a fine example of that vision.
