Titled "Exodus," this June 1983 issue of Dave Sim's self-published Cerebus presents a quietly striking cover: the small, stocky aardvark stands crouched between two large wooden barrels, framed by a tall vertical column of darkness behind him, his expression guarded and sword at the ready. There's something genuinely compelling about how much mood Sim wrings from such a spare composition — a lone figure hemmed in by shadow and circumstance. A fine chapter in one of the most ambitious solo creative endeavors in comics history.
