Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8 (July 1986) marks the first crossover in the series' history, pairing Eastman and Laird's Turtles with Dave Sim's Cerebus the Aardvark in a story that remains one of the most celebrated collaborations of the 1980s independent comics movement. Beyond the crossover itself, the issue introduced three characters who became pillars of the franchise's supernatural mythology: Renet (the impulsive apprentice Timestress), her formidable master Lord Simultaneous, and the exiled demonic villain Savanti Romero — together establishing the entire time-travel corner of the TMNT universe. The story was the first to push Eastman and Laird's world decisively into magic and mysticism, expanding the series' tonal and narrative range in ways that subsequent comics, animated series, and films would revisit for decades. Its influence on TMNT storytelling is traceable from Tales of the TMNT #7 through the 2003 and 2012 animated series, both of which adapted its central premise, and to IDW's continuity, where Renet returned as the same character from the Mirage run.

The issue was co-written and drawn by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, with Dave Sim handling all of Cerebus's dialogue, lettering, and artwork, while Sim's longtime background collaborator Gerhard rendered the medieval environments once the story shifted to 1406 A.D. — producing a distinctive visual split within the same pages. The collaboration grew out of mutual respect between the two camps of the mid-1980s black-and-white indie boom, during which both TMNT and Cerebus were flagship titles. An originally planned back-up story by Ryan Brown (Rion 2990) was dropped from this issue due to production complications and never appeared elsewhere. Decades later, Peter Laird — fearing Dave Sim would withhold reprint permissions — commissioned a Cerebus-free alternate version of the story, 'The Paradox of Chudnovsky,' written by Stephen Murphy and drawn by Jim Lawson in 2007; Sim ultimately granted permission, the original was reprinted in the 2009 Collected Book Volume 1, and the alternate became supplementary rather than a replacement.

- First appearance of Lord Simultaneous, the Time Master who oversees the 79th Level of the Dimension of Null-Time and wields the Sceptre of the Sacred Sands of Time.
- First appearance of Savanti Romero, a former apprentice of Lord Simultaneous who was transformed into a demonic being and banished to 1406 A.D. as punishment for attempting to usurp his master's power; his name is a deliberate tribute to horror filmmakers George A. Romero and Tom Savini (and is even misspelled 'Savini' on page 19 of the issue).
- Crossover appearance of Cerebus the Aardvark (from Dave Sim's Aardvark-Vanaheim series), the Turtles' first-ever crossover with another publisher's character, with Sim personally writing and drawing Cerebus within Eastman and Laird's pages.

- The 2003 animated series episode 'Time Travails' and the 2012 series episode 'Turtles in Time' are both loosely based on this issue, though neither includes Cerebus.
