Cerebus #80

The cover of this November 1985 issue from Aardvark-Vanaheim presents a striking, large-scale figure rendered in the style of Marvel's The Thing — all rocky orange hide and massive fists — draped in flowing white-and-blue priestly robes, with a smaller figure of the same rocky character perched on one outstretched hand. Cover pencils and inks by Dave Sim and Gerhard bring an impressive monumentality to the image, the looming figure dwarfing the rooftops visible in the background. "Causality Casualty" promises the kind of unexpected mash-up of pop culture and Cerebus's ongoing religious and political saga that made this series one of independent comics' most ambitious runs of the 1980s.
