“Cerebus' Six Crises: Crisis No. Three Balances”

In "Cerebus' Six Crises: Crisis No. Three Balances," Dave Sim crafts a sharp, satirical dive into political chaos as Cerebus' growing frustration with nobles and peasants alike catches the attention of the increasingly erratic Moon Roach. With New Sepran’s treasury empty and mercenaries demanding more gold to fight anyone with money, the looming threat of foreign invasion on Palnu adds a tense new layer to the already crumbling state—though whether that threat will be the final straw remains uncertain. The story, illustrated and lettered by Sim, is a masterclass in escalating absurdity, all rendered in his unmistakable, detail-rich style.

Cerebus' complaints about a peasant uprising and rebellious nobles are overheard by Moon Roach, who decides to take matters into his own barely-lucid hands. Meanwhile, the invasion of New Sepran reveals yet another empty treasury, and causes more haggling with mercenaries to invade somebody...anybody...who has money. As it turns out, though, he may not have to worry about it much longer. Foreign invaders are closing on Palnu, now.
