Grant Morrison was born on 31 January 1960 in Scotland and has become one of the most intellectually ambitious writers in mainstream comics, recognized for nonlinear storytelling, humanist philosophy, and a distinctly countercultural sensibility.
Morrison broke into the industry through British anthology comics, including 2000 AD, before making a significant mark at DC Comics across a career spanning from 1986 onward. Their early American work on Animal Man and Doom Patrol established a reputation for bending genre conventions, while the graphic novel Arkham Asylum demonstrated a darker, more psychological range. The seven-year Batman storyline — threading through Batman, Final Crisis, Batman and Robin, Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, and two volumes of Batman Incorporated — stands as their most sustained DC achievement, and it introduced Damian Wayne, Bruce's son and eventual Robin, to DC's permanent roster.
Creator-owned projects produced some of Morrison's most personal work: the three-volume philosophical thriller The Invisibles, along with Flex Mentallo, We3, Seaguy, and The Filth, the latter three made with collaborators Frank Quitely and Cameron Stewart. At Marvel, a three-year New X-Men run brought comparable ambition to that franchise.
Morrison also edited Heavy Metal magazine from 2016 to 2018. Their work has earned Eisner, Harvey, and Inkpot awards, and in 2012 they were appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to film and literature.
