Seven Soldiers: Zatanna #1

Part of Grant Morrison's ambitious Seven Soldiers crossover, this 2005 DC series opener drops DC's fishnet-clad magician Zatanna into a genuinely unsettling situation — the cover by Ryan Sook shows her wide-eyed and open-mouthed, clutching a top hat while an overwhelming swarm of red-eyed white rabbits engulfs her from every direction. The contrast between Zatanna's vivid, fully rendered figure and the stark, sketchy mass of rabbits surrounding her gives the image a surreal, almost nightmarish quality that perfectly suits a sorceress whose tricks may have gone very wrong. A strong start to a four-issue miniseries written by Morrison and illustrated by Sook and inker Mick Gray.
