“Counting to None (American Death Camp Part One)”

Brian Bolland's cover for this December 1997 DC Vertigo issue is arrestingly simple: a massive, greenish, otherworldly hand fills the frame against a stark black background, three fingers extended in a gesture that feels somewhere between a peace sign and something far more unsettling. The detail work on the skin — textured, almost necrotic, glowing faintly at the edges — gives the image a quiet dread that perfectly suits Grant Morrison's reality-bending series. With Phil Jimenez on interior art and the story kicking off the "American Death Camp" arc, issue #11 of The Invisibles looks like a compelling entry point into one of Vertigo's most ambitious ongoing conspiracies.
