About this Issue

New X-Men #114 is the opening chapter of Grant Morrison's transformative run on the flagship X-Men title — a run widely regarded as the most significant reimagining of the franchise since Chris Claremont's departure. The issue introduced Cassandra Nova, a concept-driven villain unlike any the X-Men had faced before: a mummudrai, a bodiless astral parasite who copied Charles Xavier's DNA in utero and became his ideological dark twin, going on to orchestrate the massacre of sixteen million mutants on Genosha. The issue simultaneously debuted Frank Quitely's sleek new team uniforms, signaled Beast's 'secondary mutation' toward a more feral form, and reframed the X-Men from gaudy superhero squad to something closer to a covert strike force — a shift whose ripple effects shaped X-Men storytelling for the rest of the decade. Cassandra Nova later became the only villain introduced in the 21st century to appear on IGN's list of the 50 Greatest Comic Book Villains, and she made her live-action debut in the 2024 MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine.

In "E Is for Extinction, One of Three," Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely kick off a chilling escalation as Cassandra Nova marshals a new generation of deadly Sentinels. With Hank unveiling a more powerful Cerebra, the team's hopes rise—until a test opens Charles's mind to a terrifying intrusion. Cover by Frank Quitely and Tim Townsend.

History

The issue was born from a deliberate top-down editorial reset: incoming Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada wanted the X-Men line to recapture critical credibility, and to that end he recruited Grant Morrison — then best known for DC work including The Invisibles and JLA — to take over the X-Men (vol. 2) ongoing, which was retitled New X-Men starting with this issue. Frank Quitely, Morrison's collaborator, redesigned the team's look from scratch, and Marvel had in fact been commissioning costume redesigns (including work from Alex Ross) even before Morrison came aboard, so there was no friction over abandoning the spandex. The creative team on #114 was completed by inker Tim Townsend, colorist Brian Haberlin, and letterer Saida Temofonte of Comicraft, with Mark Powers editing and Pete Franco as assistant editor.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Cassandra Nova — created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely — a mummudrai (astral parasitic entity) who replicated Charles Xavier's DNA while both were in the womb, effectively making her his twin sister and dark ideological counterpart.
  • First issue written by Grant Morrison on the title; the ongoing series was simultaneously renamed from X-Men (vol. 2) to New X-Men for the duration of Morrison's run, with the new title featuring an ambigram logo.
  • First in-story appearance of the X-Men's new Quitely-designed team uniforms — leather/polyester outfits inspired thematically by the 2000 X-Men feature film — replacing the team's traditional superhero costumes.
  • First appearance of Beast's more feral physical features, the result of his 'secondary mutation' — Morrison and the title introduced the concept that mutants can develop an additional, distinct mutation later in life.
  • Part one of the three-issue 'E Is for Extinction' arc (issues #114–116), which culminates in Cassandra Nova deploying kaiju-sized Wild Sentinels to destroy the mutant nation of Genosha and kill approximately sixteen million of its inhabitants.
  • Also introduces Donald Trask III (nephew of Bolivar Trask, creator of the Sentinels) and the minor character Ugly John — an Australian mutant with three faces — both making their first appearances.
  • Debut of Cerebra, an upgraded, more powerful successor to Xavier's Cerebro telepathy amplifier, which Hank McCoy unveils in this issue; Cassandra Nova exploits it to invade Xavier's mind.
  • The issue has been reprinted extensively, including in New X-Men by Grant Morrison (2011), X-Men: The Adamantium Collection (2014), and New X-Men Modern Era Epic Collection #1 (2024); Emma Frost appears on the Frank Quitely cover but does not appear within the story itself.
