“Superdestroyer”

Few covers in 2002 managed to be simultaneously unsettling and oddly funny: a heavily mechanized, skull-faced figure in close-up appears to be inhaling a glowing, swirling energy form directly from an open bag of "Eater Chips with Salt" — part three of an arc titled "Superdestroyer." Frank Quitely's pencils and Tim Townsend's inks give the moment a strange, almost mundane menace, the biomechanical horror of the figure contrasting perfectly with the cheerful snack-food packaging. Grant Morrison and Igor Kordey are along for the ride inside, which promises this issue delivers something as inventively weird as its cover suggests.
