The Invisibles #19

Brian Bolland's unsettling cover for this October 1998 Vertigo issue sets the tone perfectly: two figures wearing blank theatrical masks — one crouched over the other, who lies sprawled in fishnet stockings and a studded leather harness — are posed against a draped American flag, while a snarling black dog looms in the background. The imagery captures the psychologically charged, power-laden atmosphere that Grant Morrison's The Invisibles does so well. With interior art by Chris Weston and inks by Ray Kryssing, "Black Science 2, Part 3: Pavlov's Dogs" promises another layered, mind-bending chapter from one of Vertigo's most ambitious series.
