New X-Men #142
The "Assault on Weapon Plus" arc kicks off here in 2003 with a cover that immediately commands attention — a brooding, trench-coated Wolverine looms out of the shadows, adamantium claws gleaming as he stares down the viewer with barely restrained intensity. Chris Bachalo's pencils and Tim Townsend's inks give the figure a jagged, almost feral energy that feels perfectly suited to a story promising a reckoning with Weapon Plus. Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men was already one of the most talked-about in the title's history, and this opener — part one of four — looks set to push Wolverine into some very dark territory indeed.
