Animal Man #14

Aug 1989 · DC · 1.50 USD; 1.85 CAD; 0.80 GBP
“Spooks”

"Spooks" marks a pivotal moment in Animal Man’s journey, as Buddy Baker confronts unsettling echoes of his past when he encounters a figure he’s only glimpsed once before—back when he was ten. The eerie atmosphere thickens as Maxine sees her father, Ellen senses something in the house, and Cliff’s late-night Ouija session yields the cryptic numbers 9 and 27, now hauntingly mirrored on the door of the Baker house. Written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Tom Grummett, with inks by Steve Montano, colors by Tatjana Wood, and letters by John Costanza, the issue’s chilling tone is perfectly captured in Brian Bolland’s striking cover.

Maxine sees a person she thinks is her father, then Ellen feels a presence in the house. When Buddy investigates, he finds the same person and recalls seeing him once before when he was 10. Elsewhere, Cliff and two friends play with a Ouija board and come up with the numbers 9 and 27, numbers which also appear on the door to the Baker house.
