About this Issue

New X-Men #115 is the issue where Grant Morrison's reimagining of Marvel's mutant franchise announced itself with full force: Cassandra Nova unleashes a pair of kaiju-scale Wild Sentinels on Genosha, wiping out sixteen million mutants in a single stroke and delivering the most catastrophic act of mass destruction in X-Men history to that point. That act of genocide — committed in only the second issue of Morrison's run — irrevocably reset the emotional stakes of the entire franchise and established a darker, consequence-heavy register that would define the book through to its conclusion. The issue also marks the first appearance of Ellie Phimister, the goth precognitive student whose code name, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, was drawn from a Monster Magnet song; she would later become a breakout character in the Deadpool film series. Taken together, the Genosha massacre and the debut of Negasonic Teenage Warhead make this a genuinely pivotal issue — the moment Morrison's X-Men stopped feeling like a relaunch and started feeling like a reckoning.

History

The issue arrived as part of the broader 'Marvel Knights' editorial wave that newly appointed Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada engineered beginning in 2000, recruiting Grant Morrison — at the time best known for DC work on JLA and The Invisibles — to revitalize the X-Men line. Morrison's collaborator for the opening arc was Scottish artist Frank Quitely, who had just come off the WildStorm title The Authority and brought a similarly grounded, cinematic visual sensibility to the book. The series was the direct continuation of the numbering from the previous X-Men vol. 2, rechristened New X-Men at Morrison's request starting with issue #114; #115 is therefore only the second issue published under the new title. It shipped with an August 2001 cover date — roughly one month before the September 11 attacks — a fact that would later draw critical commentary given how viscerally the Genosha imagery echoed real-world mass-casualty events.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Part 2 of 3 of the 'E Is for Extinction' arc (New X-Men #114–116), written by Grant Morrison with pencils by Frank Quitely and inks by Tim Townsend and Mark Morales.
  • First appearance of Ellie Phimister (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), a Genoshan teenage student in Emma Frost's telepathy class who reports a recurring nightmare of mass death moments before Wild Sentinels descend on the island — a precognitive vision that comes true on-panel.
  • Negasonic Teenage Warhead's name was inspired by the 1995 Monster Magnet song 'Negasonic Teenage Warhead'; her original comics power set is telepathy and precognition, not the explosive abilities given to the Brianna Hildebrand film portrayal.
  • Cassandra Nova — whose first appearance was in the preceding issue #114 — engineers the massacre of sixteen million mutants on Genosha in this issue, killing Donald Trask after copying his DNA to assume control of a rogue Master Mold's Wild Sentinels.
  • Emma Frost survives the Genosha massacre due to the activation of her secondary mutation: the ability to transform into an organic diamond form — a power concept formally introduced across the 'E Is for Extinction' arc.
  • The issue shipped with a variant cover illustrated by Barry Windsor-Smith alongside the standard Frank Quitely cover.
  • According to the Marvel Database, New X-Men #115 is the last issue in the series to carry the Comics Code Authority Seal of Approval, marking the end of an era for the title's relationship with that self-regulatory body.
  • The 'E Is for Extinction' storyline, including this issue, has been collected in multiple formats including the New X-Men: E Is for Extinction trade paperback (first printing, 2001) and the New X-Men by Grant Morrison Ultimate Collection Book 1; it was also adapted in spirit in the X-Men '97 episode 'Remember It,' which features Sentinels attacking Genosha.
