Grant Morrison conceived the six-issue miniseries as what he called 'the latest chapter in the long-running, definitive Batman epic I've been trying to pull off since 2005,' explicitly describing the project as the counterpart to Batman R.I.P. — where he had broken the character down psychologically — with Return serving to reconstruct Batman issue by issue across distinct pulp-genre eras. Each chapter was deliberately assigned to a different artist as a formal device, with issue #6 landing on Lee Garbett (with Pere Pérez sharing pages), and Andy Kubert providing covers for the entire run. The series was published simultaneously with Morrison's own Batman and Robin title, and readers were advised to treat The Return of Bruce Wayne #6 as syncing directly into the climax of Batman and Robin #15, creating an interlocking dual-narrative structure across two concurrent monthly comics.
