“Karmageddon - Part One Tantrika”

Part of Grant Morrison, Sean Phillips, and Jay Stephens's "Countdown to the Millennium" run, this August 1999 Vertigo issue opens the "Karmageddon" arc with a Brian Bolland cover that immediately signals a shift in spiritual geography. Dominating the image is a massive, multi-armed elephant-headed deity — crowned in gold and clutching an arresting array of objects: an illuminati pyramid, a grenade, a royal crown, a typewriter, and a small serpentine figure — framed within the ornate arched stonework of what appears to be a temple facade. At the deity's feet, nearly dwarfed by the scene, a dark-haired man in glasses quietly reads a book, a quietly human counterpoint to the towering divine presence above him.
