“Satanstorm, Four: Digging up Beryl”

Part of Vertigo's "Countdown to the Millennium" banner, this 1999 installment of Grant Morrison's counterculture opus features a Brian Bolland cover that puts the cell in full, confrontational view: a silver-haired man with an eye patch, a bald figure in a Union Jack shirt and dark shades clutching a pistol, a sharp-eyed woman in leopard-print pants and a pink top, and a fourth member who looks decidedly worse for wear. The quartet radiates the kind of anarchic, world-against-us energy that made The Invisibles such a distinctive corner of the Vertigo universe, and Bolland's precise linework gives each face a vivid, almost cinematic personality. With interior art by Philip Bond and Warren Pleece on "Satanstorm, Four: Digging up Beryl," this is a fine slice of late-'90s Vertigo at its most stylishly subversive.
