“Phoenix in Darkness; Planet X 4 of 5”

Part four of five in the "Planet X" arc arrives with an unsettling image that's hard to shake: a solitary, eerily still figure wearing a biomechanical mask studded with glowing lenses, dressed in dark clothes bearing an X-Men belt buckle, stands against a murky, pale green void. Christopher Shy's painted cover work gives the whole thing a haunting, almost dreamlike quality that sets a very different tone from typical superhero fare. Grant Morrison, Phil Jimenez, and Andy Lanning's collaboration is clearly building toward something intense as this penultimate chapter of "Planet X" looms.
