Ed Brubaker was born on November 17, 1966, and has built one of the most distinctive careers in American comics over nearly four decades, working primarily in crime fiction while leaving a substantial mark on mainstream superhero titles as well. He broke into the industry with the semi-autobiographical series Lowlife and a string of serials in Dark Horse Presents, then gained broader recognition with the Vertigo series Scene of the Crime before transitioning to marquee superhero work on Batman, Catwoman, Daredevil, Captain America, and Uncanny X-Men.
Daredevil #111 (2008)
His most enduring partnership is with British artist Sean Phillips, a collaboration that began with the Elseworlds one-shot Batman: Gotham Noir in 2001 and has since produced a remarkable run of creator-owned series — Criminal, Incognito, Fatale, The Fade Out, and Kill or Be Killed among them — that consistently blend noir atmosphere with psychological depth. During his Captain America run, Brubaker co-created the Winter Soldier identity for Bucky Barnes alongside artist Steve Epting, a contribution that would eventually reach a global audience through the Marvel films.
Dark Horse Presents #65 (1992)
Outside comics, he served as executive producer and co-writer on the 2019 Amazon series Too Old to Die Young, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. His work has earned seven Eisner Awards, two Harvey Awards, an Ignatz Award, and a GLAAD Media Award — a body of recognition that reflects genuine and sustained creative achievement.
