“Without Fear Part Six”
About this Issue

Daredevil #105 (vol. 2) is the capstone of the six-issue 'Without Fear' arc spanning issues #100–105, and it delivers one of the most consequential gut-punches of Ed Brubaker's entire run on the title: Mister Fear's revelation that there is no antidote for the toxin he administered to Milla Donovan, sealing her fate as a permanently institutionalized figure and effectively ending Matt Murdock's marriage in the most devastating possible way. The issue also functions as an early showcase for Parker Robbins (the Hood) as a rising crime lord quietly consolidating power in Hell's Kitchen while Daredevil is consumed by personal tragedy — a thread that would feed directly into the Hood's broader role across Marvel's Dark Reign era. Together, the arc and its conclusion redefined Mister Fear (Larry Cranston) as a villain capable of genuinely defeating Daredevil not through physical force but through psychological and chemical warfare, leaving a mark on the character's supporting cast that persisted in continuity for years.

History

The 'Without Fear' arc was written by Eisner Award-winner Ed Brubaker with art by Michael Lark and additional inking by Paul Azaceta and Stefano Gaudiano, part of the Brubaker-Lark collaboration that ran on Daredevil vol. 2 from issue #82 through #119 and the landmark renumbered #500. The run marked the series' transition away from the Marvel Knights imprint and back under the main Marvel banner. The arc was collected in the trade paperback Daredevil: Hell to Pay, Vol. 2 (ISBN 0-7851-2815-8), which also included the Daredevil Annual (2007) #1.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Daredevil #105 (vol. 2) was released on February 27, 2008, and is the sixth and final chapter of the 'Without Fear' story arc (Daredevil #100–105).
  • Written by Ed Brubaker, pencilled primarily by Michael Lark with additional pencils/inking by Paul Azaceta, inked by Stefano Gaudiano, colored by Matt Hollingsworth, and lettered by Chris Eliopoulos; cover by Marko Djurdjevic.
  • The issue reveals Mister Fear's (Larry Cranston's) 'final secret': there is no antidote to the fear-toxin he used on Milla Donovan, condemning her to permanent institutionalization and ending her marriage to Matt Murdock.
  • Parker Robbins (the Hood) appears as an antagonist consolidating control over Hell's Kitchen's criminal underworld; his scene with Mister Fear establishes that Fear never wanted territory — only to destroy Daredevil — and that the Hood is now the dominant organized-crime power in the neighborhood.
  • Mister Fear (Larry Cranston) surrenders to police and is sent to Ryker's Island, but the issue's coda shows him already ruling the prison hierarchy through his fear-pheromone chemistry, underscoring his untouchable nature.
  • Supporting cast present includes Foggy Nelson, Dakota North, and Ox (Ronald Bloch), the latter appearing as one of Fear's muscle-for-hire Enforcers throughout the arc.
  • The entire 'Without Fear' arc (including this issue) was collected in the trade paperback Daredevil: Hell to Pay, Vol. 2 (ISBN 0-7851-2815-8), published by Marvel in 2008.
  • Larry Cranston as Mister Fear — the third character to hold that identity — first appeared in Daredevil #88 (1972), created by Gerry Conway and Gene Colan; Brubaker's arc represents his most narratively significant modern revival.
