“Scared Straight Part 1: Boyfriend in a Coma”
About this Issue

Avengers Academy #3 opens the 'Scared Straight' crossover arc, the series' first major excursion into the broader Marvel Universe, sending the traumatized Academy students to the Raft supervillain prison alongside the post-Dark Reign Thunderbolts. The issue delivers the full origin flashback for Hazmat (Jennifer Takeda), grounding the series' central moral premise — that these students were recruited not as the most promising young heroes but as the ones most likely to become villains — in devastating personal detail. Writer Christos Gage uses the confrontation between the students and their abuser, Norman Osborn, to transform a traditional 'scared straight' structure into something morally complicated: the kids aren't frightened away from villainy, they walk toward it. That willingness to let the cast act against heroic norms, only a handful of issues into the run, established Avengers Academy as one of the more psychologically serious superhero titles of the Heroic Age era.

In "Scared Straight Part 1: Boyfriend in a Coma," the Avengers Academy students are sent to the Raft to face off against the Thunderbolts program, where tensions flare and alliances are tested. When Hazmat disables the prison’s power grid, she takes Mettle and Veil with her on a bold mission to confront Norman Osborn, demanding he remove their life-threatening abilities. Written by Christos Gage and Ed Brubaker, with dynamic art by Mike McKone and colors by Jeromy Cox, this pivotal issue marks a turning point in the students’ training—and their understanding of power, trust, and consequence. The cover by Mike McKone captures the intensity of the moment with striking precision.

History

Avengers Academy launched in June 2010 as the direct publishing successor to Avengers: The Initiative, created by writer Christos Gage and penciller Mike McKone. The 'Scared Straight' storyline spanning issues #3 and #4 was itself a crossover with Jeff Parker's Thunderbolts, crossing over with Thunderbolts #147; according to Gage, the crossover idea originated with Ed Brubaker at an Avengers editorial retreat, where Brubaker pitched it after hearing Gage's series premise and the concurrent Thunderbolts relaunch under Bill Rosemann's editorial direction. Issue #3's creative team also includes inker Andrew Hennessy, colorist Jeromy Cox, and letterer Joe Caramagna, with Rosemann serving as editor.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Issue #3 is titled 'Scared Straight – Part 1: Boyfriend in a Coma,' released August 18, 2010, with a cover date of October 2010; the story title alludes to 'Girlfriend in a Coma,' a song by The Smiths from their 1987 album Strangeways, Here We Come.
  • Finesse (Jeanne Foucault), Hazmat (Jennifer Takeda), and Mettle (Ken Mack) are continuing characters in this issue — all three made their first appearances in Avengers Academy #1 (June 2010), created by Christos Gage and Mike McKone.
  • The issue contains a full origin flashback for Hazmat: sixteen-year-old Jennifer Takeda's radioactive powers emerged uncontrolled, poisoning her parents, putting her boyfriend Greg into a coma, and killing her dog; Norman Osborn then exploited her condition with further experiments.
  • The central plot engine is Hazmat using a newly demonstrated electromagnetic pulse ability to black out the entire Raft, allowing her, Mettle, and Veil to slip away from the supervised tour and track down Norman Osborn's cell with the intent to kill him.
  • The issue is the first part of a two-title crossover: 'Scared Straight' runs through Avengers Academy #3–4 and is bookended by Thunderbolts #147 (written by Jeff Parker), which covers the same Raft blackout from the Thunderbolts' perspective.
  • Guest instructors Iron Fist and Valkyrie appear in the issue — Iron Fist spars with and schools Finesse, while Valkyrie runs a separate all-female combat session with Veil, Hazmat, and Finesse; Luke Cage also appears as warden overseeing the Raft visit.
  • The crossover concept originated at an Avengers editorial retreat when Ed Brubaker suggested a 'Scared Straight' premise to Gage after hearing his pitch for Avengers Academy and the concurrent Thunderbolts relaunch.
  • The series was later collected across multiple trade paperback editions; this issue falls within the 'Scared Straight' story collected in Avengers Academy: Complete Collection Vol. 1.
