About this Issue

Daredevil #112 (December 2008) serves as the second appearance of Lady Bullseye — already established in #111 as one of the more compelling new villains in the Brubaker era — and delivers the full first appearance of Master Izo, the ancient blind sensei whose manipulation of both Lady Bullseye and Daredevil himself would drive the Hand storyline through to Daredevil #500. The issue also opens the 'Broken Hand' chapter of the five-part 'Lady Bullseye' arc, expanding the narrative beyond a single new villain into a reshaping of the Hand's entire power structure, a direct consequence of the Secret Invasion crossover's revelation that Elektra had been a Skrull. As the pivot point between Lady Bullseye's debut and the arc's central conflict — who will lead the fractured Hand — this issue established the multi-layered chess match between Izo, Lady Bullseye, and Daredevil that would culminate in Matt Murdock reluctantly accepting leadership of the ninja cult.

History

The 'Lady Bullseye' arc was conceived by writer Ed Brubaker as a deliberate jumping-on point following his 'Cruel and Unusual' arc, and he confirmed in pre-publication interviews that the story was designed to grow directly out of the Secret Invasion event's revelation that the Hand's leader Elektra was a Skrull imposter. Regular series artist Michael Lark penciled issue #112 (with inks by Stefano Gaudiano and colors by Matt Hollingsworth), returning to the title after Clay Mann handled the character-introduction issue #111 — Brubaker noted publicly that splitting the art duties let him introduce Lady Bullseye with a distinct visual energy while keeping Lark's signature noir atmosphere for the ongoing story. Warren Simons edited the issue under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, and the cover was provided by Marko Djurdjevic, who had also designed Lady Bullseye's visual concept. The full arc was subsequently collected in the trade paperback Daredevil: Lady Bullseye (ISBN 978-0785131816).
