The Phoenix force has possessed five of the X-Men and they use their new powers to expand Utopia and remake the world into a peaceful place where there is no want or need. The Avengers do not trust that this benevolent rule by the Phoenix is a positive thing and attempt to invade Utopia and take Hope. They are soundly rebuffed but Hope expresses a desire to leave with the Scarlet Witch and Cyclops lets her go. He comes to the conclusion, however, that the problem with mankind is the trust that they put in their heroes and so he decides to do away with the Avengers.
