“Without Fear Part Two”
About this Issue

Daredevil vol. 2 #101 is the second chapter of Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark's 'Without Fear' arc, the storyline that permanently altered Matt Murdock's personal life by driving his wife Milla Donovan into institutionalization through Mister Fear's chemical manipulation. The issue is notable for establishing The Hood (Parker Robbins) as a rising Hell's Kitchen power broker operating in the background of the arc — with Turk Barrett acting as his street-level agent — weaving the character into the street-level Marvel crime world months before Brian Michael Bendis would expand his role in New Avengers. As a piece of Brubaker's run, it represents the Eisner Award-winning team's commitment to a noir, consequence-driven Daredevil where villains actually win, setting a template that later writers returned to repeatedly.

History

The issue was written by Ed Brubaker with interior art by Michael Lark and Stefano Gaudiano, colors by Matt Hollingsworth, and a cover by Marko Djurdjevic — the same core team that had been building toward the 'Without Fear' arc since Brubaker inherited the title from Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev. Brubaker had already steered the series through major arcs including 'The Devil, Inside and Out' and 'Hell to Pay Vol. 1' before reaching this six-issue climax beginning at the landmark #100 issue. The arc and this issue were edited by Warren Simons under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Part two of the six-part 'Without Fear' story arc, published October 24, 2007 (cover-dated November 2007), spanning Daredevil vol. 2 #100–105.
  • Written by Ed Brubaker with interior art by Michael Lark and Stefano Gaudiano; cover painted by Marko Djurdjevic.
  • The Hood (Parker Robbins) appears in the issue — in a cameo capacity — as an emerging criminal overlord whose gang is in conflict with Mister Fear's Enforcers for control of Hell's Kitchen.
  • Turk Barrett appears as an operative working for The Hood, acting as an informant who deliberately steers Daredevil toward Mister Fear.
  • The issue continues the storyline in which Mister Fear has secretly dosed Milla Donovan — Matt Murdock's wife — with a psychosis-inducing drug, leading to her arrest and psychiatric evaluation; this arc ultimately ends with no cure being possible and Milla's permanent institutionalization.
  • Milla Donovan and Foggy Nelson appear primarily in flashback sequences within this issue.
  • The Hood's first appearance in Marvel Comics was in Hood #1 (July 2002), created by Brian K. Vaughan, Kyle Hotz, and Eric Powell; his appearance here is part of Brubaker building him into the broader Marvel street-level crime landscape.
  • The full 'Without Fear' arc (#100–105), including this issue, was collected in the trade paperback Daredevil: Hell to Pay Vol. 2 (ISBN 0-7851-2815-8) and later in the Daredevil by Brubaker & Lark Omnibus Vol. 1 (multiple printings through 2022).
