Ed Brubaker took the helm of Uncanny X-Men directly off the back of his own limited series X-Men: Deadly Genesis, which had reintroduced and powered up Gabriel Summers (Vulcan) as the story's central antagonist. With Joss Whedon simultaneously occupying the A-list X-Men cast in Astonishing X-Men, Brubaker built his twelve-issue space epic around a secondary roster — Professor X, Nightcrawler, Marvel Girl, Havok, Polaris, Warpath, and Darwin — giving those characters room to breathe in a cosmic setting. Artist Billy Tan, inked by Danny Miki and Allen Martinez with colors by Frank D'Armata, served as the primary visual team on the arc, with editors Mike Marts, Nick Lowe, and Sean Ryan overseeing production; the full arc was later collected in both an oversized hardcover (2007) and a trade paperback (2008), and has since received a new printing.
