Sean Phillips's cover for this 2019 Image Comics issue sets the mood perfectly: a silver-haired older man in a dark suit sits at a red-bathed table, chin resting on his clasped hands, his expression unreadable — cool, calculating, or perhaps just tired. Spread before him are a liquor bottle, a couple of shot glasses, scattered bills and coins, and a handgun, the whole scene drenched in that crimson light that makes every object feel like evidence. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips's Criminal continues to deliver noir storytelling with this kind of atmospheric dread right there on the cover, and "Bad Weekend" sounds like a promise they intend to keep.
