The Immortal Iron Fist #8

History

Written by Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction with interior art split between David Aja (present-day sequences) and Roy Allan Martinez (flashback sequences), issue #8 opened the second major story arc of a series Aja himself later described as a 'sleeper hit' that no one had expected to succeed. Aja designed all of the Immortal Weapons characters on a compressed one-month deadline, doing heavy cultural research and extensive sketching before settling on their final looks — including his deliberate choice to give Fat Cobra Japanese rather than Chinese cultural signifiers, framing him as an outlier among the seven champions. For the arc's cover design, Aja adopted a pulp-magazine portrait format: each of the seven covers was to feature one of the seven tournament participants, though after the first three covers Marvel redirected the approach to keep Iron Fist himself visible on the cover, meaning the Bride of Nine Spiders portrait cover for issue #10 was completed but never published.
