Ed Brubaker wrote the issue as an intentional stand-alone between arcs, with interior art handled by John Paul Leon — a guest fill-in rather than regular series artist Michael Lark, whose noir linework anchored the surrounding storylines. The cover assignment went to John Romita Sr., whose romantic illustration of Matt and Milla sparked divided opinion among reviewers, some finding it an affectionate nod to the character's Silver Age roots and others feeling it clashed with the title's established crime-noir tone.
