Kanigher entered comics in the early 1940s and built his reputation largely at National Periodical Publications, where he took over scripting duties on Wonder Woman from the character's creator, William Moulton Marston, stewarding the franchise for more than twenty years. His most enduring contribution to the medium, however, came through war comics. He spent years editing and writing National's war titles — among them Our Army at War, G.I. Combat, Our Fighting Forces, and Star Spangled War Stories — and in that context created Sgt. Rock, the gruff, battle-worn infantryman who became one of comics' defining military characters.

Kanigher also wrote a pivotal moment in superhero history: "Mystery of the Human Thunderbolt!" in Showcase #4 (October 1956), which introduced Barry Allen as the Flash and is widely regarded as the story that launched the Silver Age of comics. His output was extraordinary in volume — credited on well over a thousand issues throughout his career — reflecting a disciplined, workmanlike approach that kept him central to mainstream comics for generations. His co-creation of Sgt. Rock remains his most celebrated legacy.
