This November 1969 issue of Star Spangled War Stories showcases Enemy Ace in a striking cover by Joe Kubert, depicting a gleaming armored knight — proclaiming himself St. George, come to slay "the Hammer of Hell" — charging forward on a white horse with sword raised, bearing down on a dark-clad, cross-adorned figure recoiling against the wreckage of a red aircraft. The collision of medieval chivalry and World War I aerial combat gives the image an almost mythic charge that only Kubert could pull off with such confident linework. Inside, Robert Kanigher's story "A Grave in the Sky!" promises more of the brooding aerial drama that made Enemy Ace one of DC's most distinctive war features of the era.
