Robert Kanigher — who served simultaneously as writer, editor, and chief architect of DC's war-comics line — created the G.I. Robot character and scripted the lead story, with Ross Andru penciling and Mike Esposito inking both the cover and the interior pages, the same artistic team that had been running the 'War That Time Forgot' feature since its debut in issue #90 (May 1960). The issue was published with a cover date of March 1962 (on sale February 10, 1962) and carried the standard Silver Age cover price of twelve cents across its 36 pages. Kanigher edited the entire issue, which also included backup stories by Irv Novick and Jack Abel, with lettering on the lead story provided by Gaspar Saladino. The concept of an expendable robot soldier deployed so that human lives might be spared in combat was very much in keeping with the early-1960s cultural conversation around automation and Cold War military technology, and Kanigher grounded the fantastical premise — a robot parachuted onto a Pacific island swarming with living dinosaurs — in the familiar 'buddy' structure already well-established in DC war books.
