This December 1961 DC war comic pulls you in immediately with a gripping cover by Jerry Grandenetti: a dog-tagged hand labeled "SARGE" clutches a rope rising from churning water, while a white horse strains at the other end and an enemy tank with soldiers looms through the jungle shadows in the background. The cover blurb tells you everything you need to brace yourself — Sarge must fight a tank with one hand in the story "Lifeline for Sarge!" The Gunner & Sarge series was delivering this kind of tense, visceral wartime drama for just ten cents, and Kanigher and Grandenetti clearly weren't holding back.
