Origin story. Young John Tane's father is sheriff and expects his son to follow him. His mother says "Books are better than bullets", and John promises to be a schoolteacher. Yet his father is aging and needs him. So John becomes two people and adopt the identity of "Johnny" + "Thunder" during a storm. He changes clothes, blacks his hair, changes his speech, and becomes an unofficial sheriff, saving his father from bandits, then resuming his identity of John Tane, schoolteacher.
