John Powers Severin was born on December 26, 1921, and spent more than six decades as one of American comics' most versatile and dependable craftsmen before his death on February 12, 2012. Rooted in a tradition of careful draftsmanship, he built his early reputation at EC Comics during the early 1950s, contributing to the celebrated war anthologies *Two-Fisted Tales* and *Frontline Combat* — titles that treated armed conflict with unusual seriousness and historical weight. He was also among the founding cartoonists of *Mad* in 1952, helping to establish the satirical voice that would reshape American humor publishing.

At Marvel, Severin found a long home in war and Western comics, with *Sgt. Fury* standing among his most recognized credits there. His greatest sustained commitment, however, was to *Cracked* magazine, where he worked for roughly 45 years across the main title and several spin-off editions, contributing as artist, inker, colorist, letterer, and occasional writer — a breadth of craft reflected in credits spanning nearly 930 issues across his career.

His line work was prized for its precision and controlled detail, qualities that served equally well whether he was rendering battlefield grit or broad parody. In 2003, the industry recognized his body of work with induction into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.
