Two-Fisted Tales #28
In "Checkers!", two weary tank commanders, Straus and Kilpatrick, find themselves in a high-stakes rescue mission after a patrol is ambushed on the Kumhwa Road. Drawing on the strategic mindset of a simple game of checkers, they use clever maneuvers to outwit enemy forces and save their platoon—proving that battlefield brilliance can come from the most unexpected places. Written by Harvey Kurtzman and illustrated with sharp precision by John Severin, with inks by Will Elder and colors by Marie Severin, the story’s cover by Kurtzman himself captures the tense, game-like tension of the moment.

Finishing a game of checkers, Straus and Kilpatrick nearly miss a required briefing of all tank commanders by the C.O., who informs them that a patrol sent down the Kumhwa Road had been ambushed and badly hit, and they needed to be rescued. When the going gets tough, Straus and Kilpatrick maneuver their tanks as if they were playing checkers and win the battle, saving the platoon.
