“Bouncing Bertha”

"Bouncing Bertha" delivers a harrowing, unflinching look at the brutal reality of war, told with stark precision by Harvey Kurtzman and John Severin. In this powerful 1951 EC Comics story, a nervous new recruit becomes trapped in barbed wire under fire, forcing a Sergeant to make a devastating choice—captured in a moment of raw, unforgettable tension. The cover, also by Kurtzman, captures the grim weight of the scene, setting the tone for a story that’s as emotionally devastating as it is masterfully drawn.

The new recruits were obviously nervous, awaiting the order from the Sergeant to go over the top toward the Jerries. One in particular stuck close to the Sergeant, who promised to "show him the ropes," when all of a sudden, a German machine gun opened up on them, causing the friendly forces to retreat. The young recruit, wounded, was hung up in the barbed wire and screaming for help, and two soldiers advanced to help....and were killed, and then another. The Sergeant did the only thing he could: he mercifully shot the recruit.
