Sgt. Fury #54

A vivid red cover frames Sgt. Fury himself firing a submachine gun across a battle-torn field as enemy soldiers charge in the background — with the portrait faces of his Howling Commandos (including a mustachioed figure in a red beret and several other squad members) arranged around the central action in a bold collage composition. The story title "Izzy Shoots the Works!" promises that one of the Commandos gets a moment to shine, and Dick Ayers's pencils with John Severin's inks give the whole scene a punchy, kinetic energy that defined Marvel's war comics in 1968. A solid chapter in one of Marvel's most dependable wartime series, with Gary Friedrich at the helm and Marie Severin's coloring making that scarlet background pop right off the stands.
