"A Short Injun War" opens with a conflict between Sheriff Arden and a man named Gabe Arden over hunting rights and eagles on sacred ground, escalating to the point where Arden issues a warrant. The main story, "The Rookie," follows Lieutenant Malcom Legget, fresh from West Point, as he takes command at a frontier military post where he must contend with a seasoned, unruly sergeant named Platt; Legget eventually earns Platt's respect through his military knowledge and confidence. The Cheyenne Kid story follows the title character as he guides soldiers to locate two eagles for the cavalry, sympathizing with the Native Americans involved and helping resolve a conflict between Captain Wade and Arden over a warrant issued against an Indian.
