Battle Action #28

Two soldiers clash in brutal hand-to-hand combat on John Severin's gripping cover — one fighter in green fatigues drives a bayoneted rifle downward while his opponent, pack still strapped to his back, grapples desperately with a drawn blade. Atlas's 1957 war anthology was delivering some of its most visceral battlefield drama at this point, and this issue pairs Severin's cover intensity with interior art by Gene Colan on "The Commie-Busters," a combination that makes Battle Action #28 a fine snapshot of Cold War-era comics storytelling.
