“Abe Lincoln!”

In "Abe Lincoln!" from Frontline Combat #9 (1952), Harvey Kurtzman’s sharp script and John Severin’s dynamic art bring a poignant, grounded perspective to the Civil War, capturing the fleeting hope of young soldiers who believe the conflict will end in weeks. As three Union troops bond over shared ideals and a romanticized sense of duty, their camaraderie is tested by the harsh truth of war’s endurance. The cover, a striking collaboration by Kurtzman, mirrors the story’s blend of idealism and grim realism.

As Union forces go marching confidently out of Washington D.C., each soldier reminds himself that he has enlisted only for 3 months, and the war should be over within 60 days -- or so they think. The rebels have other ideas. Three Union soldiers become, in their minds, the Three Musketeers and vow to see the battle out together. Reality sets in once one of them falls; this will be a long war.
