About the series

Spanning 298 issues from 1977 to 2004, Dave Sim’s Cerebus is an epic, self-published fantasy-comedy that follows a cynical, anthropomorphic aardvark through a world of sword-and-sorcery adventure and biting political satire. Initially a parody of Conan the Barbarian, the series evolved into a sprawling, deeply personal narrative, with Sim writing and drawing most of the run, later joined by background artist Gerhard for its celebrated second half. Alongside a cast that includes the warrior Artemis Strong, the hapless Elrod, and the formidable Astoria, Cerebus is a landmark of independent comics, demonstrating the creative and commercial possibilities of creator-owned publishing.
