Born Matt Fritchman on December 1, 1975, Matt Fraction built one of the more distinctive careers in mainstream American comics over the past two decades, working across Marvel, DC, and Image with a voice that balanced sharp wit with genuine emotional weight.

Fraction made his way into comics in the early 2000s, with his catalog credits reflecting consistent activity from 2003 onward across more than 350 issues. At Marvel he took on a remarkable range of flagship titles — Punisher War Journal, The Immortal Iron Fist, Uncanny X-Men, The Mighty Thor, and a celebrated run on Invincible Iron Man that helped define the character during a period of renewed mainstream visibility. His work on Hawkeye is perhaps what cemented his reputation most firmly, offering a street-level, formally inventive take on Clint Barton that drew considerable critical attention.

Beyond Marvel, Fraction created Casanova for Image, a densely layered spy-fi series that showcased his more experimental tendencies, and later co-created Sex Criminals with artist Chip Kidd — a book that blended absurdist comedy with surprisingly earnest character work. He has also written for DC, contributing to Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen and Batman.

Across genres and publishers, Fraction's writing is characterized by strong character interiority, playful structure, and a willingness to let humor and heartbreak occupy the same page.
