The issue sits at a creative crossroads: writer Matt Fraction, who had helmed Uncanny X-Men since #500, was in the process of transitioning off the title, co-plotting and then co-writing the 'Five Lights' arc alongside incoming writer Kieron Gillen, who had designed all five new mutants specifically in anticipation of launching the Generation Hope series. Pencils were split between Whilce Portacio — a classic X-Men artist returning for the arc — and Leonard Kirk, whose mid-issue fill-in was noted by contemporary reviewers as a visible seam in the book's visual consistency.
