The issue falls inside Matt Fraction's extended Uncanny X-Men run, with interior pencils by Whilce Portacio — a returning fan-favorite artist whose earlier tenure on the title in the early 1990s made his re-association with the book editorially noteworthy. Nick Lowe served as editor, and Terry Dodson provided the main cover while Mike Mayhew produced a 1-in-15 Vampire Variant cover. Primal was co-created by Fraction and Kieron Gillen, the latter of whom would soon take over the series and shepherd the Five Lights characters into Generation Hope.
