The Mighty Thor #3

The blood-red sky of this 2011 Marvel series entry sets an ominous tone, with Thor standing atop a crumbling stone archway, Mjolnir raised as lightning crackles around him — all dwarfed by the vast, looming silhouette of an enormous cosmic entity blazing in the sky above. The cover by Olivier Coipel and Mark Morales has a genuinely cinematic weight to it, using scale and color to suggest that whatever Thor is facing dwarfs anything he might ordinarily contend with. With Matt Fraction's "The Galactus Seed" storyline in full swing by part three, this issue promises the kind of grand, mythic stakes that make Thor stories so compelling.
