Dark Avengers Modern Era Epic Collection #1
"Utopia Part 1" kicks off a pivotal arc in the Dark Avengers Modern Era Epic Collection #1, marking a turning point in the fractured relationship between mutants and the regime in San Francisco. Written by Matt Fraction and illustrated by Luke Ross, with inks by Rick Magyar, Mark Pennington, and Ross himself, the story unfolds as Hank’s condition worsens after the Omega Machine’s brutal experiments, sparking unrest led by Hellion and a tense clash between the Dark X-Men and Norman’s X-Men. Emma Frost’s growing fury over the treatment of mutants leads her to demand answers—only to be blinded by Dark Beast’s cunning holograms, even as Charles Xavier stands before her, pleading for help. The cover by Mike Deodato Jr. captures the escalating tension, setting the stage for a story where loyalty, identity, and truth are under siege.

Hank's condition continues to deteriorate after being put through Norman's Omega Machine which messes up mutant powers. Hellion and his followers stage a protest and the Dark X-Men are sent to bring them in. Cyclops meets with Osborn and tells him to depart San Francisco and leave the mutants alone. The Dark Avengers duke it out with Norman's X-Men team for dominance. Emma is angry at the way the mutants are being treated and demands to see the subjects of the Omega Machine. Even though Xavier is right in front of her and pleading for help, Emma fails to see him due to Dark Beast's holograms.
