History

Matt Fraction came to the series directly from his work on The Order, a short-lived Marvel title in which he had already introduced the villain Ezekiel Stane as a behind-the-scenes antagonist. Editors Alejandro Arbona and Warren Simons shepherded the launch, with Joe Quesada serving as Editor-in-Chief and also contributing cover art. Marvel deliberately timed the issue's ship date to align with the theatrical release of the 2008 Iron Man film, positioning it as the definitive comics complement to the movie. Fraction has spoken publicly about his intention to confront the darker elements of Stark's legacy — including his alcoholism, with which Fraction had personal experience — and rebuild the character from the ground up.
